Review of Black Death (2010) by Timothy K — 06 Apr 2011
I was really looking forward to this film, so when I heard that river oaks was doing a special two night midnight run, I was ecstatic. The film is set up beautifully with Sean Bean's opening narration.
The tone is dark and eerie. The visuals are majestic and grainy. And it took about 15 minutes into the film when I got worried There was an overuse of the handheald camera. When there was action, you were all over the place.
If there are rotting plague infested bodies draped over Britain's gorgeous landscape, then I want to be able to see it. I want to be drawn into a film with steadiness and fluidity before I get tossed around the screen.
But either the film saved itself or this was planned. About midway through the film, the fluidity sets in and you are forced into the films action and drama. You quickly grow to hate and love characters and develop bonds within emotions.
"Black Death" delivers on the eerie aspect with the use of swamps, fog, and witches. the character work is very enthralling. Once the film was over, I wanted to see more. I felt as if more could have been done.
.. But then again, that's just me.
