Review of Black Death (2010) by Steven M — 31 May 2011
Pinning Christians and pagans against each other in 14th century Europe where a devastating plague is wiping out thousands while the rest succumb to fear and paranoia, reducing matters to witch-burnings and blood-baths.
It follows a newbie Monk freshly leaving the monastery in hopes to guide some soldiers to a "land where the sickness cannot reach", only to experience despair and vengeance in the worst ways possible.
My kinda movie. I'm guilty of loving the ominous, dreadful, harrowing tales rarely told well in movies, but this one surprised me with its brutal look into the darkest souls of those who are, because of their horrific times, at their most faithful and religious.
It doesn't end happy. Again, my kinda movie. But whether you simply want a bloody ride through the "good 'ol days", or something a little more thought-provoking, nab this beast.
