Review of Black Dahlia (2006) by Rajneel S — 10 Jan 2009
Factual accuracy and solid storytelling take a backseat in this over-the-top, cheesy and over-convoluted movie with a misleading title (the Black Dahlia murder is only one - and very small - subplot that shares screentime in this film).
It's not all bad - James Ellroy's wonderfully hard-boiled story is - on paper - quite good and there are some wonderful visuals, seamy 1940's detective atmosphere, gorgeous sets and some very colorful characters, but Brian DePalma drops the ball AGAIN with his poor sense of pacing, over-stylized acting and a ludicrous third-act which is pieced together by an endless parade of contrivances.
A fun watch for fans of the period, but the ridiculously over-complicated and highly unlikely story is utterly unswallowable. Pretty cornball and certainly no 'L.A. Confidential" - which is a masterpiece.
