Review of Black Dahlia (2006) by Camden N — 02 Jun 2009
This is one of the worst adaptations I have ever seen. With his novel "The Black Dahlia" James Ellroy turned pulp into high art and wrote a devestating, savage and heartbreaking tale of sexual obsession, corruption and even friendship. But with his half-assed executions of this film De Palma has actually done the complete opposite.....he has turned art into garbage. This is almost a parody of the noir genre.
The two worst things about this movie is watching the few scenes De Palma and co actually got right, it kept reminding me what a masterpiece this could have been, and second; the casting is way off. This could actually be the worst casting I've seen since Billy Bob Thornton tried to take on Cormac McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses" (another American literary masterpiece that deserved so much better).
This movie is a waste of time. Go out and buy the book. De Palma left out all the good stuff, there's no gritt, no soul, no horror or humanity....but don't worry, you'll find it all in the novel.
