Atmospheric and well-acted, Depalma attempts to recreate the genius of L.A. Confidential (surely the bench-mark for Hollywood Noire Thrillers) with middling success. Harnett and Eckhart make for compellingly smug detectives caught in a grim web of nasty murders and backdoor pornography and smut.
Its shot stylishly and basically ticks all the boxes, though ultimately, Ellroy's source material is not greatly realized and it never really rises above the constraints of Depalma's slightly unimaginative approach.
