Review of Black Dahlia (2006) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
Horrible acting and sensless storytelling make a boring film... Before this I've never been able to sit through a Brian De Palma film (and believe me I've tried), so this was a first... Sadly my expectations were high, thinking this might a great intriguing mystery I was let down on almost every level.
Maybe I'm the only one, but I was confused throughout most of the film. Even when Hartnett was narrating and telling you what was going on I was still confused... The story focused more on Eckhart, Hartnett, and Johansson than the actual case itself... It shouldn't even be titled The Black Dahlia.
It should be more accurately titled Good Cops, Bad Cops, and a Dead Girl... Seeing as how most of the film neglects the case of the Black Dahlia, and focuses more on storylines that feel stiff and rigid. The characters aren't compelling, the story isn't intriguing, and the actors aren't acting!
It takes what feels like an eternity to get to discovery of the body, and takes what feels like another eternity to figure out what happened... That's two eternities!
On the bright side, the set design is pretty good, the cinematography is top notch, the music is outstanding, and the overall style is easy on the eyes.
