Review of Black Christmas (2019) by Joshwashere — 26 Nov 2021
Absolutely garbage writing. I saw this without seeing the trailer, so I was expecting some kind of slasher set at Christmas time. Instead, it's a horror movie with propaganda littered throughout it. Some of the sentiment is good (women should be empowered and men need to keep their hands to themselves) but the dialogue is just so poorly written. We are told the morals that the writers want us to hear, instead of shown them.
All the male characters are creeps or unwitting weak idiots. The women are all heroic badasses or treacherous pickmeishas. There's 0 subtlety or depth to any of the characters.
What I did like: The acting wasn't half bad, and the premise for the villains was actually scary. Several characters appear to be suspicious and there's a twist that I liked.
For a recent movie that promotes its ideology far better and that is actually scary, I recommend Get Out.
