Review of Black Christmas (2006) by Al M — 15 Dec 2010
As a rabid fan of Bob Clark's original Black Christmas (as well as his other early horror films), I must admit that I was pleasntly surprised with this remake and enjoyed it despite it's being utterly derivate and unnecessary.
Perhaps most notably, Black Christmas adds an involved backstory to the killer, which could be read as either a positive or negative aspect of the film. Bob Clark's classic remains so visceral partly due to its lack of motive and explanation, but I thoroughly enjoyed this version's twisted background, which it reveals in segments, because it so fully participates in the vein of classic slasher tales.
Plus, this Black Christmas featuers some genuinely twisted death and mutilation scenes. Ultiamtely, this remake is by no means great, but it does manage to truly evoke the classic era of slasher films in a way that most remakes do not.
Unnecessary crap, yes, but entertaining crap nonetheless.
