Review of Black Book (2006) by Andy S — 18 May 2008
I know a lot of folks who like this film (and I can understand why . . . action, intrigue, and the hero "wins"), but I just couldn't shake my dislike for it. Oh, the acting is fine enough and the set decoration is decent, yet, it just felt too much like the creators tried to do a crossbreed of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Schindler's List".
No, not the funny parts of "Raiders", but just the shooting style and lighting. For whatever reason I just couldn't take this film seriously. I know it is covering a serious subject, but it all seemed so bubble-gummed over.
Perhaps I would have liked it more if it didn't give away the ending at the beginning. Maybe I would have felt the need to hang with it if I didn't know the main heroine makes it through in the end.
I'd skip this one and rent "Schinder's List" instead (or at least "The Diary of Anne Frank").
