Review of Black Book (2006) by Eric H — 21 Jul 2008
Black book is the kinda movie they don't usually do anymore. Verhoeven has created a excelent movie that blends different genres together seemlessly.
Zwartboek tells a story of a jew girl hiding in neatherlands during the Nazi occupation of Europe. The movie takes the lead character through almost unbelievable story of twists and turns, and yet it is loosly based on real events. As mentioned before, the Zwartboek blends genres seemlessly, you have your basic drama, some spy/espionage parts and ofcourse a healthy dosage of action.
Carice van Houten deserves equal praise as Verhoeven in my mind, I have not seen such a good lead woman role in a while. Houten brings Ellis to the screen as innocent yet seductive young woman who must do whatever to survive.
I found hardly anything wrong with Black Book, if there is one it is towards the end of the movie where the plot twists pick up the pase and can be difficult to follow. The hectic ending is not enough to ruin this great movie luckily.
