Review of Black Book (2006) by Sabine F — 22 Feb 2009
Carice van Houten has been compared to fellow Dutch actress Scarlett Johannson, and the consensus is that not only is van Houten more beautiful, but she actually has talent. That girl fell out of the lucky tree and hit every branch on the way down.
The dimensions of her performance are the shining center of the film, which is a complex, sensual exploration of the limits of human endurance and the battle for physical and mental survival. The chemistry between van Houten and Sebastian Koch is tangible and adds another dimension to the already sophisticated structure of the story.
(They have been a real-life couple since the movie, by the way.) An absolute must-see.
