Review of Black Book (2006) by Antony A — 09 Jan 2010
Another masterpiece by a legend of our age, Paul Verhoeven. This is easily one of the best WW2 films ever made. The Hollywood machine can't churn out anything close to this. It is subdued, but powerful.
Carice van Houten is stunning, both her beauty and acting. All the supports are superb. Here, Dutch, Germans, Jews, and Canadians are all shown as human beings first, commiting acts during wartime which one would never consider in normal life, where the good guys have dark aspects - some darker than others, and where the most vile characters offer up some light and genuinely pleasant brief moments.
A classic film.
