Review of Black Book (2006) by Duntsanek W — 27 Jun 2011
Holocaust or World War 2 has been touched upon in numerous ways in Cinema but Zwartboek approaches it in quite a refreshing style. It uses purely a cinematic way of telling the story and uses all the cinematic tools like twists, thrills, stylized visuals etc to entice the viewer. And you don't complain, specially bcz it has it's heart at the right place. In spite of being chiefly an entertainment vehicle it doesn't get rhetoric, manages to avoid prejudices from creeping in and attacks the vicious & treacherous elements which feed upon the misery created by war.
It was particularly surprising to know it came from a maker who made films like Basic Instinct,Total Recall,Hollow Man but may be that's what it required, a maker more conscious of the medium he is working with than enormity of subject matter at hand.
Watch it if you haven't.
