Review of Biutiful (2010) by Sv G — 05 Jun 2011
Javier Bardam brings a brilliant performance here that is down right haunting. The kind of performance that will stay with you long after the movie is over. In this Spanish film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Bardam plays a man (Uxbel) who lives on the fringe elements of Madrid.
His wife who is bi-polar and a drug addict no longer lives with him and their two children. He supports them by working in the black markets that uses the Chinese immigrants to do the work and in very sub-standard conditions.
He also sits with the dead where he gets paid to tell the family what their dearly-departed have to say before they depart. A gift he is told by his mentor he should never take money for. His wife Marumba is played by Maricel Alvarez in an equally stunning performance.
In the midst of his already chaotic life he finds out he has cancer and is dying. This is a sad and very dark film, but it has a lot to say. For me this was however, all about the performance - being primarily a performance driven film.
I think this is Bardam's best thus far.
