Review of Biutiful (2010) by Jonathan B — 06 Jun 2011
Biutiful is Alejandro González Iñárritu's second disappointing film in a row and does little to quite doubts if he will ever fulfill the promise he originally showed on his first two features.
Quite frankly, Javier Bardem is Biutiful's one and only saving grace. It's a masterful performance and very deserving of its award attention. The rest of the film, however, is a mess. I wasn't as off put by its depressing nature as a lot where.
What really got me is Iñárritu never justifies it with a point outside of the cliche of even when life is crap, there's still some beauty to it, which isn't even communicated that well, either.
The codas the story counts on for some reason are awash of meaning and there's subplots that go absolutely nowhere. At least 20 minutes could easily have been trimmed without skipping a beat, and, seriously, what was he thinking when he wrote Uxbal could communicate with the dead? Dumb, dumb, dumb.
A wasted opportunity for sure.
