Review of Biutiful (2010) by Wes M — 11 Aug 2011
God, this was insane!
Easily one of the saddest, most disturbing films I've ever seen, and I've seen a few of those! Inarritu, in typical fashion, yanks at your heartstrings til you're at the brink of utmost pain. I used to think James Franco was my favorite performance for best actor of 2010. Nope. Javier Bardem is, without question, the best actor of the year for me. I mean, yea, Colin Firth won, cuz everybody saw that movie, and it was really likable and stuff. Whoopdido, Basil. But this was an unbelievable performance with soul and true feeling. *Tips hat to Javier* The plot, which I will not speak of, is rather fast-paced for a 2.5 hour film, shit is constantly happening. (Best to go into this one blindly for full effect, watch the trailer tho, you'll have no idea what you're in for!) It's also in 3 languages, and Inarritu puts each different language in it's own color subtitle, which I thought was a cool trick. Also, some sweet cinematography and long tracking shots. I am appalled that this was not nominated for Best Picture...stupid academy. Only bad thing about this amazing movie, is that it leaves you feeling SO bad. I dunno if I'll ever have the strength to see it again. But I'll prolly get over it...just a phase haha. Shocking film. Thumbs up!
