Review of Biutiful (2010) by Prabhat R — 19 Aug 2011
Not as engaging and ripe with complex emotions as Babel or Amores Perros, but Biutiful is still a decent and a depressing offering from the Spaniard. The story meanders and also somewhat stagnates for a while, but the portrayal of the grim and exacting routines of Bardem's character's day-to-day life give a raw and a serrated-edge sort of a feeling to the whole deal.
Despite the lapses in the story, it's Bardem's ability to personify pain, distress, anger, redemption and acceptance that breathes whatever life we could find in the movie, complemented well by Iñárritu's direction and the prodding and goading camerawork.
Not an easy movie to watch because of the naked and blinding emotions at play here, but Bardem should be the only reason if one does give it a try.
