Review of Bitter Moon (1992) by Zoran S — 13 Sep 2008
This is a fascinating and dark film from Roman Polanski. In terms of its tone, it is one of his odder films, as it alternates between eroticism, black humor, and down right silly moments in which you can never quite be sure if you are supposed to laugh or not.
The violent ending may seem like a shock at first, but when thought about more, it casts the entire film in a different light, making this one of the more cynical and pessimistic stories about love and sex made in recent years.
The performances are all good, though I have mixed feelings about Polanskiâ??s wife. That said, Iâ??m not really sure who else would want to play such a role.
