Review of Bitter Moon (1992) by Alyssa N — 09 Jul 2010
The peculiar relationship this movie chronicles, from its beautiful and tender beginning to the messy, horrific ending felt so much more real than all the perfect little Hollywood romances we're used to being force-fed.
Because yes, these people are crazy to an exaggerated degree, but there's just enough truth to keep me believing every second of it. So it's easy to appreciate this movie as an edgy, subversive character study, but that's all an extended flashback.
The framework for the story is much less compelling, and the incongruous ending is not plausible in the slightest. I don't know why so many directors feel like they need to end their movies with a literal "bang" instead of a figurative one.
It just left me with a bad taste in my mouth, but not for the right reasons like the rest of the movie did.
