The story of the "Holodomor" is an important history lesson to tell. This film was supposed to do that, and it failed miserably. After reading the reviews, I agree that this story deserved better than what "Bitter Harvest" gave us.
It seemed like the filmmakers were more interested in telling a sappy love story than to try to depict the atrocities caused by the Stalin regime. It felt more like a student's first film than a Hollywood motion picture.
Every film cliche was stuffed into the 103 minutes of awfulness. There was not any cohesion between scenes. It's like unrelated parts were sloppily pieced together. I did laugh at one scene which was a blatant rip-off of the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in "Star Wars: A New Hope.
" Maybe someone else can make a film to tell the story the right way.
