Review of Birthday Girl (2002) by Rachel V — 12 Oct 2007
I've seen many Nicole Kidman movies, but have never seen one with her having brunette hair. Set in England, she plays a Russian mail-order bride in this movie, who is nothing like what she appears.
She tricks men into sleeping with her and then allowing her 2 dodgy Russian male accomplices to rob them dry and kill them. She looks very pretty in this movie - in a grungey, rock-chick sort of way - I have never seen her in this image before, but I loved it.
The movie was not boring at all, you never really know what's coming, and in some parts quite funny and some other parts quite cute. Its a modern British romantic comedy, a bit like watching Love Actually.
I thought Ben Chaplin was the perfect main actor of the show. And actually, towards the end when he was pretending to be a Russian guy, I thought he really looked the part too! The story is actually a bit far-fetched once you sit down and think about it, but its only a movie, not a documentary, and as such, I enjoyed it for what entertainment value it was worth.
I never caught it in the cinema when it was just released, but I can say its an excellent movie to rent.
