Review of Birth (2004) by Benjamin J — 30 Nov 2009
Pretty good. Behind the story of death, rebirth and the philosophical issues of personal identity, there is a strange Freudean/Lacanean subtext of desire and trauma*. Anna loses her husband, moves on and gets engaged. However, she still lives with the memory of her husband and can never erase it. 10 years on and a boy arrives claiming to be her husband's reincarnation. What we see from then on is the return of the repressed idea of Sean reproducing the trauma of his loss and exposing the disturbing underside that sustains Anna's relationship with Joseph. A film more about loss and relationships than reincarnation.
* Does that make it a good film? Hell no. Still OK though.
