Review of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020) by Jakeyjake — 30 Mar 2020
Margot Robbie is great as Harley Quinn (as expected).
And the action in this film is captured beautifully by Jonathan Eusebio (see work on "John Wick").
That's about where the praising for this movie ends because this movie has a lot of problems. From a film making perspective, it's mostly component. But you kind of expect that. You expect a big budget DC title to at least be that. Other than leading a competently made movie, director Cathy Yan and Writer Christina Hodson really don't provide anything interesting here. The plot is simple, which is fine if the characters are well fleshed out but it seems as if this movie is mainly focused on fleshing out Harley Quinn and that's it. Why this movie is (or was?) called "Birds of Prey" and not "Harley Quinn: and the Birds of Prey", is beyond me. This movie makes little effort in exploring it's titular characters outside of Quinn and the film suffers because of it.
