Review of Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) by Randy T — 15 Jun 2010
A somewhat fictionalized account of Robert Stroud, the inmate known as the Birdman of Alcatraz, this is an excellent film starring Burt Lancaster and Karl Malden. Lancaster's portrayal of Stroud is amazing - he juggles both hardened criminal (and I would propose borderline sociopath) and quiet genius most adeptly. Malden's role as Warden in Leavenworth and lather Alcatraz is stand-up. Telly Salvalas plays a rather enjoyable part as well.
The pacing of the movie is a bit ponderous and as such, will not be enjoyable to most viewers who need constant action to stay involved in a film. (And, honestly, that's the only reason I gave it an 4 stars instead of a full 5.).
