Review of Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010) by Julian T — 27 Jan 2012
An absolute masterpiece. You have never seen anything like this before, I can guarantee it. Unbelievable in every sense of the word. I really don't know where to even start with it.
First, the acting is just amazing. Honestly, it makes the cast of 'Troll 2' look like Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman and Daniel Day Lewis. Alan Bagh turns in what is without a doubt the best/worst performance of all time, and I say that with no reservations. Fortunately for everyone's enjoyment, every other cast member is equally horrific. An excellent twist of casting events is detailed on the back of the DVD, exclaiming 'Featuring a special appearance by Tippi Heddrin!!' I'm seriously not shitting you, this 'special appearance' is footage of her on the TV in the background of a scene.
Another thing is, of course, the special effects. To call them 'special effects' is actually disrespectful to special effects, because in place of effects are GIFs. It is so unreal that it really makes you question the reality we live in.
The direction and editing (particularly the sound editing) are other major points. It is simply a masterpiece of technical execution. The fact that this took Nguyen 4 years to produce this is mind-numbing. It seriously should have taken perhaps 4 weeks.
All of the horrible acting, execution and visual effects aside, the dialogue and story are what sell it. So may incredible moments... The dance scene at the bar, the boardroom scene, the hippie in the woods scene, the coat-hanger scene, and a plethora of others combine for a most memorable viewing experience. The ridiculously heavy handed message regarding global warming has done more harm than good for the cause I'm sure.
I feel like I've done a crappy job reviewing this film, but if I can impose one thing, just do yourself a favor and see it. There is no way I can properly put into perspective the incredible horrificness of this movie. It is simply incredible. Incredible. I can not wait for 'Birdemic 2' in motherfucking 3D.
