Review of Bird on a Wire (1990) by Matt R — 04 Nov 2009
This is the sort of action / romance comedy that couldn't be made today: too many laughs, too many unlikely predicaments and antic capers, and too many mullets. The action never crosses the line into suspense, as with a movie this light-hearted you really have no doubts about how it's going to end up - it's just a matter of how to get there.
Love blossoms anew, the bad guys get their just desserts, and Mel - who has a talent for getting banged-up but still doing the job - comes out on top in the dramatic showdown conveniently set in a done-up movie studio.
I hope this doesn't really ruin the movie for anyone, but let's just be honest - nobody sees a movie from the swansong days of the 80s and expects anything else, do they? Watch it for laughs, watch it for entertainment - it's a good popcorn flick, but nothing else.
..but if you're aiming for an 80s movie, what else do you want?
