Review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) by Brad S — 14 Feb 2017
A massive failure of a filmmaking experiment in my opinion. I might have gotten past the high frame rate cinematography and it's terrible skin tones and off putting lighting if the dialog, plot and story were good, but the script felt amateurish. The sound and music didn't help but hindered the film as well. The performances felt theatrical instead of cinematic. I couldn't get past constantly feeling like all of the actors we're speaking through ADR over themselves the entire time. Their lips never quite lined up with their voice. It made the film feel even less real.
I've read people rave about high frame rate as so good looking and clear and sharp, but I felt the opposite. I continually waited for the movie to feel real to me like nearly every other movie of the past 40 years. But it never got there. Such a massive disappointment.
