Review of Billy Elliot (2000) by Steph O — 28 Jul 2010
Throw together a movie about britain in the 80s - so it's either about mining or hooligans - and the classic script of an ugly duckling story - although the duckling isn't that ugly in this case -: out comes billy elliot, or at least something similar.
It's a good portrait of how a family is torn between its political standpoint (and go on strike) and the need to earn money (and go back to work), and how it deals with the unexpected prospect of their youngest family member (in a male-dominated family) becoming a ballet dancer.
Jamie bell definitely is a discovery in this one.
