Review of Billy Elliot (2000) by Cheuk Fei N — 06 Jan 2011
Billy Elliot has that certain charm to it that really makes it a joy to watch. I was quite amused by Jamie Bell's performance as the 11 year old boy who is struggling with boxing lessons until he stumbles upon a ballet class and decides to give it a try.
What Billy discovers is that he has the true potential and destiny to be a ballet dancer, but this path comes at a price as his father very much objects against it. The movie is funny and sometimes awkward in a humorous sense.
But it also follows on a dramatic side as Billy must somehow balance out his dancing and family issues which really makes the journey difficult for him. My only minor complaint is that the British accents were quite thick in some scenes making some of the dialogue difficult to make out, especially when they aren't speaking some of the dialogue much clearly to begin with, but this really wasn't a common issue.
Overall, quite enjoyable!
