Review of Billy Elliot (2000) by David F — 15 May 2011
Crowd-pleasing underdog that seemingly came from nowhere to become a huge hit, both as a film and as a musical play. Young northern English lad decides he'd rather dance ballet than box as his father and brother, locked out of their mining jobs by a strike, look on with increasing alarm.
Bittersweet at times and hilarious at others, it's classic British gender-bending fun. Jamie Bell is spot on as our plucky hero.
