Review of Billa (2009) by Jinesh C — 19 Dec 2007
The first thing I want to say is, for all the people who were skeptical about Ajith in this movie, he has proven a point - that he can rise to the occassion.
The movie is very stylish but at the cost of reality. Not a single scene resembles any thing an Indian would come across in his real life, but then it is not the purpose of the movie. It is meant to deliver a stylish fantasy kind good guy - bad guy plot and it does it well.
But if you want a movie that has a screenplay that is as good as the original one, you will be disappointed. The script takes a tumble at a lot of places but all credit due to Ajith who manages to pull it back everytime on his own. He does an excellent job in keeping the audience in the movie with his minimalistic dialog delivery and fabulous body language, both as a notorious criminal and an innocent police rat.
The movie would not have lost anything if Nayantara and Namitha were absent. High time the Tamil industry kick out this third-rate actors from the industry. Prabhu, simply, has forgotton how to act. Rahman is ok in his role.
The music and choreography were an utter disappontment. The camera work is spot on.
In summary the movie does what it intends to do - a stylised remake of the original Billa, but at the cost of a mediocre script.
