Review of Bill Cunningham New York (2011) by Paolo R — 23 Mar 2012
This is a film about obsession. But it's not dark. This is a film about fashion. But it's not bitchy. This is a film about love. But there's no marriage or sex. This is a film about New York.
But it's life as seen by one man's singular vision. An 84 year old man who dresses in Parisian street-sweepers' smocks and taped up kagouls should not be taking photos of young people on the street or on the cat walk.
But he is. As one man says, ushering Bill into a Paris couture show "This is the most important man on earth". And this man has no bad word for anyone, has stayed pure and obsessed for 50 years, and still produces the goods weekly for the NYT.
Lovely.
