Review of Bill Cunningham New York (2011) by Patrick D — 26 May 2012
Watched this last night: it's a fascinatingly poignant portrayal of a legendary New Yorker Bill Cunningham. Known for his bloody minded and tenacious stubbornness the documentary reveals a fragile, sensitive recluse of a man very much at odds with the fashion industry which he has documented so thoroughly.
At ease with the rich and famous he lives in spartan surroundings and near total social isolation and yet is passionately devoted to beauty with an eye as sharp as his wit. He should have come across as a socially inept oddity and he does but the film also captures a wonderfully gentle gentleman who is immensely likeable.
Quirky and inspirational missing it is not an option.
