Review of Bill Cunningham New York (2011) by Joshua B — 14 Sep 2012
Bill Cunningham New York is a marvelous documentary that follows the titular New York Times fashion photographer as he rides around the city on his bicycle taking pictures of real New Yorkers, elevating the regular urban landscape to high fashion.
It does not sound like the stuff of gripping filmmaking, and indeed, fashion is low on my own list of interests. But Bill Cunningham himself is the star of this film, not his craft, and it is as much an exploration of his passion as it is about his art.
The real draw of the movie is in watching his sheer, unadorned joy, for Bill Cunningham loves his city and his work and his life in a way that makes it hard not to love it with him.
