Review of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) by Dustin D — 09 Nov 2018
A ridiculous and dumb fun comedy going to the stretches of the imagination.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) is based off the simple premise of two slackers in 1988 having to pass their history class. That's it. But the story goes so much farther as you are taken on a truly excellent adventure through time with the help of the iconic comedian George Carlin as Rufus. These two men represent 1980's slang, clothing, hair metal, chill vibes, and human decency as they are just good guys trying to get by earnestly.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure teaches you some basic history, but more importantly the value of history, friendship, and working smart, not hard. This movie is just a fun time that feels like you are hanging out with your dearest friends. You listen to cool music, hear clever references, and embark on a silly odyssey throughout the ages. The clever writing with a wit centered around idiocy in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is what makes it work. The comedy is simple, yet so inoffensive, anyone can laugh along with it.
The direction is pretty swift, while the effects are dated, you will never mind, as the narrative is too much of a joyride to gripe about special effects.
I have to mention the driving force behind the movie is its heroes. Alex Winter as Bill and Keanu Reeves as Ted are not master thespians, but genuine airheads that are instantly relatable and lovable. You cannot help these two bumbling, yet harmless fools are they run around breaking the rules of time and space. You will root for these dudes as they are so casually hilarious. Winter and Reeves' awkward performances are so sincere in their mindlessness, that they transform into charming roles.
Check out Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure for an ever entertaining watch. It remains one of my favorite comedies for sure!
