Review of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) by Kerry L — 12 Jun 2010
Bogus is just about the right word to sum up this lame sequel to the stupidly funny "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure". This movie actually starts out decently, but when the writers run out of ideas after about 30 minutes through, the movie dives into an abyss of awfulness.
I liked the original. I really did. It was stupid sure, but it was more self-aware of itself. It knew it was a stupid comedy, and it had the right sense of humor to make it enjoyable. This one also knows it's a stupid comedy, but much too often, it embraces the stupid, and not the comedy.
A lot of the dialogue from Bill and Ted feels recycled from the original, and their stupidity results in more head shaking than belly laughing. The evil robots were also pretty lame, and the martian scientist, "Station", quickly gets on your nerves.
He's like a pokemon from hell. He even speaks by repeating his name over and over again... seriously. By the end of it, I didn't care what happened to Bill and Ted. I just wanted this movie to end.
Another thing that was missing from this sequel was the time travel element. To me, that was one of the best parts of the original. It was hilarious to see these dumb 80s dudes interacting with different cultures and time periods.
Here, they end up in heaven and hell... big deal. On a postive note, the special effects were neat. I just wish the film spent less time focusing on the special effects and more time on the laughs. "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" gives us a glimpse into what "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" could have been if just a few changes were made.
It's an awful sequel, and if you don't want to have a torturing experience, just stick to the original, and forget that this sequel ever existed.
