Review of Bigger Than Life (1956) by Ed Q — 05 Jul 2009
On the surface "Bigger Than Life" is a supremely entertaining melodrama, but being a Nicholas Ray film there's also a good dose of subversive humor and social commentary. Ray's direction and use of colorful widescreen compositions is often stunning, and James Mason is fun to watch.
Behind the silly music cues and drama typical of the period lies a bold critique of the nuclear family, conformity, and traditional values.
