Review of Bigger Stronger Faster* (2008) by Cli O — 13 Dec 2008
As someone who is constantly peeved when the tragic Chris Benoit murder-suicide is erroneously blamed on roid rage, it was refreshing to see this informative, well-balanced documentary on the steroid sub-culture, which also happens to be highly entertaining and funny at the same time.
This is not a propaganda piece that tries to denounce the evils of steroids, as it examines how the media has often blown their side effects way out of proportion and suggests that there are those who actually benefit from taking them; at the same time, the film doesn't serve an endorsement for steroids either, as director Chris Bell does not shy away from the negative effects steroids have had on his brothers.
The documentary is also a very effective examination of the myth of heroes in American culture, and asks if those cheat to get ahead are really cheating when everyone else is doing the exact same thing.
