Review of Bigger Stronger Faster* (2008) by Charles H — 24 Jun 2009
The filmmaker does a nice job of maintaining objectivity with subjects that obviously are very close to home. The movie provides outstanding background information and exhaustively expounds on the cases both for and against performance enhancers.
The piece strains a bit as its documentarian attempts to thrust performance enhancement use into the larger context of being American. Nevertheless, his claim that his family-members' usage is a "... symptom of being American," is made with an earnestness that elicits sympathy, if not complete agreement.
Still, as long as Mr. Bell goes this far, he might as well flesh-out the relationship between performance enhancers and America's cult of celebrity a little better. Indeed, not exploring in detail this facet of the problem seems like an inexcusable waste, considering that his older brother swears that he has been showered in stardust. Nowadays, everyone thinks he can and should be a star, and each seems willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen, regardless of the risks or side-effects.
