Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Jess K — 10 Feb 2012
As much of a cheesy 80's B movie as it is, Big Trouble in Little China is impossible to not love. There are few film characters as immediately iconic as Jack Burton; a trucking-driving, self-styled philosopher, a hero who doesn't know he's really the sidekick, an inept John Wayne as likely to knock himself out as his enemy.
Kurt Russell and the entire film's lack of pretension make what could have been hokey genre trash into cult movie bliss. While there are innumerable things to love (the three storms, the six demon bag, every line of dialogue) Jack is such a large personality that he dominates the screen, despite only being involved in maybe half of the action.
The film is undiluted fun, an action/horror/comedy classic. It's even educational. So if you're ever staring down a 2000-year-old demon with light shooting out its mouth, remember what Ol' Jack Burton always says, "What the hell?".
