Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Wes M — 30 Apr 2013
"I'd go with you, but..." "I know, there's a problem with your face." Ok, let's face it, the movie doesn't deserve too much recognition. It's quite bad. Everyone besides Kurt Russell is guilty of overacting (yes, even Kim Cattrall, she was dreadful).
The writing/dialogue were laughable, sometimes intentional, most times not. The special effects were very good. But if the movie was more concerned with eye-popping fx, then it should stop trying to take itself seriously and just go all-out for the ridiculous factor.
There are SOME moments when it gets insane, and those are the best parts. But the movie should've been constantly wonky for me to appreciate it. Yes, I know, this was a John Carpenter. Turns out he's not flawless, and he claims he's proud of this movie, but it's the one that made him "give up on Hollywood" and return to indie flicks.
The movie is bad, but it's one of those bad movies that's fun to watch. It's kinda like Kung Pow meets Army Of Darkness, but not nearly as funny or as bonkers. It's worth a watch if you wanna "kill" an hour and a half.
3 Stars is me being generous.
