Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Billy K — 08 Dec 2009
I can see why this movie become a cult favourite. Seen it once long ago and bought the DVD recently to recap. Quite funny, far-fetch, but still entertains. Kurt Russell is a truck driver delivering cargo in chinatown.
When his friend Dennis Dun try to double or nothing a challenge of slicing a bottle with a knife into half, Kurt accept it. Kurt won but Dennis is broke and ask him to follow him back to the restuarant for the money.
But he needs to go to the airport for the arrival of his wife, a chinese with green eyes. At the airport, she was kidnap by a well known gang. Kim Cattrall was there and she seem to know something's going on.
Kurt & Dennis give chase in the truck to chinatown and goes into an alley. Then 2 gangs emerge and have a showdown. Suddenly 3 powerful warriors (Thunder, Rain, Lightning) appears. Kurt drive over David Lo Pan (James Hong) who is a socerer/monster kind of being.
They managed to escape. Kurt wants his truck back and follow Dennis to find James in his place. Victor Wong is a local tour guide who is also aware of Lo Pan existence. Kurt & Dennis got in but got captured.
Meanwhile Kim, Kate Burton and Donald Li got worried and went in to find them. And they also got captured. The duo finally seen Lo Pan and he told them he is cursed and to break it, he needs to marry a girl with green eyes.
Kurt escapes and freed the rest of the people and upon running out, Kim got caught by a monster. She also have green eyes and Lo Pan decides to marry both ladies. The 2nd rescue mission is assisted by Victor and some local gang.
The wedding ceremony made Lo Pan a mortal again. Kurt throws a knife at him and missed. He throws back but Kurt got it and shoot back into his forehead. They all escapes by his truck. Kurt got triple the money Dennis owes him and his truck back and hits the road but the monster is a towaway.
