Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Antoine O — 28 Feb 2010
Kurt Russell being one of my favorite actors I had to see this movie. I first thought I was going to see a bad Indiana Jones ripoff but I was completly wrong. Big Trouble in little China is not an Indiana Jones ripoff it's very entertaining like Raiders of the Lost Ark but also very different.
The plot has some typical adventure elements but it's not too clichéd.
Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) and Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) attend the Los Angeles airport to meet friends from China, who are soon kidnapped by a group of chinese gangsters. The group of chinese gangsters turn out to be more than simple criminals and so the adventure begins.
Kurt Russell is excellent as Jack Burton. Jack Burton is completly different from any character Russell has ever played before. He looks like a hero, but he's clealy not, he's wannabe hero. Jack Burton is arrogant, fails at everything he does and is funny as hell. This is definetly one of Kurt Russell's best performance. The rest of the supporting cast (Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Victor Wong) is also very good.
The direction is top-notch, John Carpenter proves that he can direct big budget movies.
The action choreography in this movie is superb. We get to see group of people fighting against each other, with swords, fists, guns, magic powers etc. The set-pieces are magnificent, they really add to the look of the movie.
Big Trouble in litte China is a movie I can only recommend. It's funny, the action kicks ass, Jack Burton is a unique hero and John Carpenter's direction is perfect.
