Review of Big Trouble in Little China (1986) by Blais E — 31 Dec 2010
A rousing action-adventure from director John Carpenter rife with horror and fantasy overtones aplenty, firmly cementing (Along with "Escape From New York") Kurt Russell's standing as a great action hero.
Set in San Francisco, cynical trucker Jack Burton (Russell) inadvertently becomes involved with the Chinese underworld and crosses the undesirable and very dangerous path of evil Chinese sorcerer Lo Pan (James Hong), who has diabolical plans in store not only for Jack, but especially for his plucky gal-pal Grace (A gorgeous Kim Cattrall).
Full of lotsa' chop-socky faux-martial arts battles for the Bruce Lee crowd, a coupla' oddball supernatural critters, likable characters, and loads of cartoonish action, this is highly evocative of, and pays obvious homage to the action serials of the 30's and 40's, once again proving Carpenter's enormous versatility and proficiency as a director in almost all film genres.
