Review of Big Stan (2007) by Joshua B — 04 Apr 2009
Big Stan isn't a gut-busting comedy like Role Models or I Love You Man, but Rob Schneider's directorial debut surprised me nonetheless.
Schneider gives it his all (he collapsed on the set from heat exhaustion), and has assembled a great cast of veteran actors (M. Emmet Walsh, Sally Kirkland, David Carradine, Thomas Gibson, Scott Wilson), screen fighters (Simon Rhee, Tsuyoshi Abe, and I'm pretty sure I spotted Mark Hicks), and MMA fighters (Bob Sapp, Don Frye, Randy Couture) - all of whom fill their roles admirably and give the film that little something extra.
What's most remarkable is that the film features some really good fight scenes (Schneider's in great shape!). But above all, Big Stan's got a lot of genuine heart, both on the screen and off, judging from the behind the scenes doc on the disc.
