Review of Big River Man (2009) by Niklas S — 06 Sep 2009
Martin Strel is overweight, in danger of a stroke, and a heavy drinker. He's not the kind of guy you'd expect to be a world record breaking endurance swimmer. This doc, narrated by his son Borut, enters the heart of darkness as Strel attempts to swim the length of the Amazon, a total of 3,375 miles.
References to Herzog are quite apt here as this has a feel of Fitzcarraldo about it... and madness is never too far away. Not the most polished doc, but a fascinating subject nonetheless.
