Review of Big River Man (2009) by Gerry R — 02 Jun 2010
I was quite disappointed by this film, probably because I was expecting a proper documentary. First, there's not much actual swimming shown, and too much preparation, adulation, and propaganda. Second, the first 1/3 of the film is spent hyping up how dangerous swimming the Amazon will be - alligators, poisonous snakes, piranhas - but not a single such incident happens during the entire swim, making it rather boring.
Third, and perhaps because there were no incidents to speak of, the filmmakers seem to have created drama about the swimmer's declining health - his high blood pressure and mental status - but the blood pressure related risks seem overblown and the psychosis seems completely staged.
