Compare this plot with Babette's Feast. The Big Night is anti-babette. Two movies about great chefs. In both the chefs are far from home, and trying to survive. In both stories there is much anticipation for a great feast.
In both very important guests are invited to the meal. Babette's Feast is a story of redemption and grace. The Big Night ends in disappointment, deception, and failure. My favorite line is when Ian Holm says "Sink your teeth into the ass of life.
