Review of Big Miracle (2012) by Movie M — 01 Mar 2012

Chalk this latest Disney meets the Nature Channel bubble gum blend of a tale to just another case of good intentions getting slapped by poor execution. It was as good a story as any in terms of the human race taking a break from killing the planet and helping out nature for a change.

Here specifically depicting the true story of when a family of grey whales were ice bound up in Alaska and an odd collection of people pulled together to rescue them. . . Green Peace gets the only form of a win here as the audience receives the message and connects with the hippie idealism of forming a bond with nature again.

Despite the desensitized race we have become, the story sheds a faint light of sensitivity to the Earth and some of its more vulnerable creations. That warm sentimentality can only go so far though. With the GUY responsible for such female friendly head shakers like He's Just Not That Into You, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and License to Wed (director Ken Kwapis) running the show, it's no wonder the audience is left with this aching thought through the run time of "why is it that I can't just take this thing seriously".

The small troupe of folks who HAVE seen this arctic escapade are giving it a collectively cold response, and I must bundle myself up to agree with em. The spinsters and the kiddies of the more easily pleased demographics will get their light-hearted chuckles and maybe even "blubber" a little waiting to see if the whales die or not, but a big time theater release that most of us will appreciate having to pay inflated prices for it is not.

Something I would much more expect to find while channel surfing and coming across it as a day-time tv original during family fun time. . . GRADE: C+.
