Review of Big Game (2014) by Andrew H — 02 Dec 2015
The film opens with majestic scenic views of ... mountains. I pause. - Wasn't this movie supposed to take place in Finland? There are no mountains in Finland really, at most a few flat hills in the arctic north. Indeed, it is supposed to depict Finnish Lapland, the far north of Finland. It turns out it is actually filmed in southern Germany.
This is what the director says:
- "Finland isn't anything like Germany.".
I couldn't agree more.
-"Finland is flat and boring".
Yes, it is flat. So where did all the mountains in the movie come from? But you are wrong, it isn't boring. Finnish Lapland is beautiful and spectacular.
-"I think that filming on location is something that every director should take seriously... It gives you an authentic feel".
Do you see where this is going? Here is a director that specifically says he is not serious enough to follow his own advice. There is nothing authentic in this movie. A bunch of finnish actors speaking finnish in something that is obviously not Finland.
One star for decent acting by Onni Tommila and Jackson.
